Thunder below eugene fluckey5/8/2023 J(Patience Bay, Off the coast of Karafuto, Japan ) Barb was indeed, the submarine that "SANK A TRAIN". In addition to the Medal of Honor ribbon at the top of the flag identifying the heroism of its captain, Commander Eugene "Lucky" Fluckey, the bottom border of the flag bore the image of a Japanese locomotive. Barb was a pioneer, paving the way for the first submarine launched missiles and flying a battle flag unlike that of any other ship. The submarine, given to the Italian Navy in 1953 was actually an incredible veteran of World War II service with a heritage that never should have passed so unnoticed into the graveyards of the metal recyclers. In 1973 an Italian submarine named Enrique Tazzoli was sold for a paltry $100,000 as scrap metal. Thanks to my friend, Ford Murray, USS Missouri tour guide, for sending this in.įor all his exploits, Admiral Fluckey said he was most proud of one thing: “No one who ever served under my command was awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded or killed, and all of us brought our Barb back safe and sound.”

Dogs from any breed can be good with children based on their past experiences, training on how to get along with kids, and personality. Our ratings are generalizations, and they're not a guarantee of how any breed or individual dog will behave. Small, delicate, and potentially snappy dogs such as Chihuahuas aren't always so family-friendly. You may be surprised by who's on that list: Fierce-looking Boxers are considered good with children, as are American Staffordshire Terriers (which are considered Pit Bulls). Being gentle with children, sturdy enough to handle the heavy-handed pets and hugs they can dish out, and having a blasé attitude toward running, screaming children are all traits that make a kid-friendly dog. James joyce best book5/8/2023 Joyce was a gifted autocritic, and even today Frank Budgen's 1934 memoir about the making of Ulysses sparkles, because it is filled with the Dubliner's table-talk. Gordon Bowker demonstrates just how comprehensively the artist also sought to control the first extended works of literary analysis on Ulysses. He insulted Joyce by failing to send him a copy of the published volume. Gorman, although he accepted the main interdictions – on family privacies – was not happy with the arrangement or the outcome. What Joyce wanted was someone who would allow him control over every element of his reputation: a biografriend. Even Joyce's uneasy struggle to exclude unflattering details from the first biography of him, by Herbert Gorman, is used to explain a passing reference in Finnegans Wake to a "biografiend". N o book on James Joyce goes half as far as this one in establishing connections between passages in the classic texts and incidents in the artist's life. The hotel nantucket review5/8/2023 But that makes this good as the kind of read that works for short bursts and interruptions because the story can be read in chapters and not lose any momentum. OPINION: The large cast of this book made it interesting to read each individual story, but I also cared less about each character. The book tells the stories of all the people at Hotel Nantucket. Lizbet, recovering from the breakup of a longtime relationship, puts together a ragtag set of skeleton staff to run the hotel. Purchased by a billionaire who wants the hotel to receive a coveted 5th Key by a reviewer, the hotel opens under the management of Lizbet Keaton. In 1922, a chambermaid was killed in a fire, and her spirit remains at the hotel. THE STORY: The Hotel Nantucket reopens after years of being abandoned. As a romance reader, I would have preferred more about Lizbet and Mario, but overall I enjoyed the book. It’s not particularly compelling but the different storylines keeps the book interesting. FINAL DECISION: This is a good beach read. I shall wear midnight5/8/2023 There, with the assistance of the spectacularly argumentative, kilt-wearing, wee but hardy Nac Mac Feegle, she tends to the needs of her village, always riding a knife-edge between being useful and being an object of suspicion who meddles in unmentionables.īut Tiffany's skills as a witch have caught the attention of the Cunning Man (surely one of Pratchett's spookiest villains), a no-eyed spectre who menaces our heroine as she goes about the business of seeing her village through a change in baron.įans of Pratchett will find much here to love, not least the fact that Tiffany is a younger, livelier, possibly humbler version of one of his most-loved creations - Granny Weatherwax. I Shall Wear Midnight picks up Tiffany's story as she settles - or not - into life as "town witch" on The Chalk, taking care of the things people generally don't like to think about. You'd think it'd be hard finding things to say about Terry Pratchett and his Discworld creations, given that I Shall Wear Midnight is his 39th novel set in the parallel world and the fourth in a young adult series starring teenage witch Tiffany Aching.Īnd yet the modern master of comic fantasy always leaves you with things to ponder long after his characters have sailed/flown/limped into the sunset. |
